General Summary of Duties:


Responsible to monitor, repair, and perform preventive maintenance program on the hotel’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment.


Typical Physical/Mental Demands:


Requires mobility.  Prolonged walking, standing, sitting, and bending.  Ability to lift, push, pull, carry, and manipulate supplies.  Ability to climb stairs and ladders.  Eye/hand coordination and manual dexterity.  Ability to distinguish letters, symbols, and colors.  Normal vision and hearing range.  Normal sense of smell, touch, and sound.


Typical Working Conditions:


Ability to work indoors and outdoors, being exposed to environmental factors such as seasonal heat, cold, noise, dust, and pollution.  Ability to work in confined spaces in awkward positions.  Use and exposure to refrigerants, oils, solvents, and chemicals.  Ability to tolerate varying conditions of noise level, temperature, illumination, and air quality.


Examples of Duties (includes but is not limited to the following):

  1. Monitor public space temperatures, making appropriate adjustments when necessary and start/stop fans as required.
  2. Assist in start-up, shut down, and operation of all HVAC equipment.
  3. Respond to customer calls and complaints to correct temperature conditions in a positive and timely manner.
  4. Perform scheduled and non-scheduled maintenance on all heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and related equipment.
  5. Identify and troubleshoot problems and make repairs accordingly.
  6. Shut off steam, water, and gas supplies.
  7. Assist the monitor and maintenance of standpipe, sprinkler, and interior fire alarm systems.
  8. Perform other related duties as assigned.


Performance Requirements (knowledge, skills and abilities):

  1. Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. 2.   Knowledge of HVAC systems including repair and maintenance and basic electric and plumbing skills. 
  2. Knowledge of OSHA standards for chemical use.
  3. Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
  4. Ability to communicate effectively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with guest, management, and staff.
  5. Ability to understand commands, questions, and instructions from supervisor and co-workers.
  6. Knowledge, understanding, and compliance of policies and procedures, job descriptions, daily memorandums, chemical labels, and other instructions.



High school education or equivalent. Trade apprenticeship preferred.


From entry-level to two years experience as an HVAC mechanic at a complex facility preferred.




Technical school certificate or trade license preferred.
